Circle Casting

Why cast a circle? It helps to protect yourself from unwanted energies, but mostly (for me) it keeps the desired energy in a focused space, and helps to get in the right mindset for spellwork. It will keep you connected to your magic throughout the ritual. Some believe the circle actually creates a space between worlds.

Different Methods of Casting a Circle:

  • Call on the elements through the cardinal directions. Each direction represents an element: earth in the north, air in the east, fire in the south, water in the west. You can do this by simply facing the cardinal directions one at a time and speaking aloud “the earth empowers my magic” (for each element) while visualizing the power of said element (i.e. a massive waterfall, a roaring bonfire, etc). For this method I recommend also incorporating an energetic casting (see below).
  • Call on the elements with an incantation. You can use the lighthouse incantation for this or find another resource; there are plenty out there. I think it’s a great idea to spend some time working up your own method because that always feels the most effective to me.
  • Energetically cast a circle. If you’re good at visualization, you might be able to simply picture a ball of light expanding in your mind. You can push it out as far as you like. Another method is using an athame (ritual knife), a wand, or just your projective (dominant) hand to energetically draw a circle around you. For the latter method, I like to keep the palm of my receptive (nondominant) hand face down to draw energy from the earth, then cast with my projective hand.
  • Mark a circle with physical objects. You could use a rock or bowl of soil in the north, a feather in the east, a candle in the south, and a bowl of water in the west. Alternatively, you could use candles with corresponding colors at each corner. Or use crystals. Or use crystals and elemental objects and candles! I’ve heard of others using 3, 4, 6 or 9 of an object to draw a circle as well.
  • Mark a circle with a pentacle. I like this method for any sort of communication ritual because I use the top point of the pentacle (spirit) as an offering or a spell candle. The rest of the points can be marked off with crystal pillars or elemental objects.
  • Draw a circle with salt! The good ol’ fashioned way. Just have your vacuum ready for afterward.

I’m inspired by visual representations of things, so I tend to mix and match the methods with physical objects. Sometimes I go real hard and remove rugs and chairs from the room to make a huge space. Sometimes I sit at my altar and cast a smaller circle. I think it all depends on the spellwork.

Most witches say that important circle-casting etiquette includes stating plainly “the circle is cast” when you’re ready to begin, and when you’re finishing up, say “this circle is closed”. I pretty much always use candles in my circles, so when I’m ready to close the circle I will put them out one by one and state my completion aloud upon snuffing the final candle.
